Who Needs Snow? LA’s Best Bets to Spread That Holiday Cheer
December 10, 2015, by Contributing Writer Stephanie Penate:
Think because we relish our 70-degree weather in the middle of December means we Angelenos don’t know a thing about how to ring in the holidays? Think again.
Los Angeles may be better known for its palm trees than snowcapped mountains (although Mountain High and Big Bear are just a couple of hours away), but that has never stopped us in our well-worn, 10-to-the-405-driven tracks.
Whether you feel like being a little naughty at the 7th Annual SANTA Monica Pub Crawl or playing nice at Downtown’s Holiday Ice Rink at Pershing Square, there are plenty of festivities off LA’s beaten path to choose from this season. Here are just a few of our best bets to showcase your unique holiday spirit.
Echo Park Craft Fair (Mark Sennett Studios, Echo Park)
Saturday-Sunday, December 12th-13th: This bi-annual art and design event features everything from jewelry, clothes and furniture to cold-pressed organic juices on sale from local artisans capturing the “relaxed, artful California bohemian” vibe that is unique to this tucked-away LA neighborhood.
Saturday-Sunday, December 19th-20th: For over 30 years, the GMCLA has used the power of music to raise awareness for important LGBT issues. This year, the LA staple is adding a “Brassy, Classy & Sassy” touch to their annual holiday performance, featuring joyful standards as well as some cheeky, festive originals.
CHILL at The Queen Mary (The Queen Mary, Long Beach)
Friday, November 20th-Sunday, January 10th: Experience the transformation of the legendary Queen Mary into a winter wonderland known as CHILL, home to The Ice Kingdom – a 13,000-square-foot exhibit featuring towering ice creations made using over two million pounds of ice. This annual family-friendly event includes tubing, ice skating, mazes, ship access and more. For an additional fee, adults 21+ may also enjoy a one-of-a-kind vodka tasting at 9 Degrees, CHILL’s newest ice bar experience.
And just outside of LA…
107th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights (Newport Beach, Orange County)
Wednesday-Sunday, December 16th-20th: Multi-million dollar yachts and other seafaring vessels will light up the coast for a 14-mile stretch around the Newport Beach harbor. This annual event named “one of the top 10 holiday happenings in the nation” by the New York Times, offers viewers a grand spectacle of animated Christmas scenes, costumed carolers, festive music and much more.
